where we are
Indiana, or the area we now call Indiana, used to be almost completely covered by dense, rich forest. This rich resource was almost depleted by settlement and logging as America expanded westward. Indiana forests have rebounded to some extent, but our forest coverage is still a shadow of its former greatness.
what we do
The Great Hoosier Forest Project seeks to help reforest the state by putting land back to its natural, pre-human state. To do this, we seek to buy distressed land, flood zone land, and other sources of less expensive land, place the land in trust, and ensure that it will never be developed or logged again. We will work with state and federal resources to ensure that native plants thrive and a habitat for the state’s native wildlife is created in the process.
why we do it
We envision a state where the least productive farmland, flood-prone land, and previously overused or misused lands have been allowed to rewild. Our great state will mostly be covered by forests, wetlands, and shrub and grasslands again. We seek to become the change we wish to see in the world. Will you join us?
